Summer Hiking in the Lake District
Fell & Dale Co. · 5 min readLive

Whether you're tackling Helvellyn at dawn or discovering hidden tarns above Borrowdale, the right kit makes every difference to your day on the fells. Summer conditions in the Lake District can change within the hour — warm sunshine on the valley floor can give way to driving rain and low cloud on the tops in a matter of minutes. At Fell & Dale Co., every product in our collection is chosen and tested in real conditions, on real terrain, so we can tell you honestly what works and what doesn't.

“A jacket that keeps rain out but traps sweat is no jacket at all on a four-hour ascent.”
Waterproofs That Actually Breathe

The single biggest mistake walkers make is buying a waterproof based on price alone. A great waterproof has to work both ways: keeping rain out and letting sweat escape. Look for a hydrostatic head rating above 20,000mm paired with a moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) above 20,000g. Fully taped seams are non-negotiable for serious ridge days. Gore-Tex Pro and eVent DVstorm are our top picks for all-day breathability when the weather closes in above Striding Edge or on the Fairfield Horseshoe.

Walking Boots: Fit First, Features Second

Your boots carry you all day, so getting the fit right is more important than any single feature. Visit a specialist retailer in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest, and always try boots on with the exact socks you plan to walk in. For summer Lake District terrain, a mid-cut boot with a B1 or B2 rated sole offers the best balance of support and flexibility. Vibram outsoles grip reliably on wet grass and loose slate. We always recommend breaking in boots on shorter evening walks before committing them to a full fell day — blisters on Helvellyn with six miles still to go are no fun for anyone.

Layering: The System That Works

Three layers will always outperform one thick jacket in variable mountain conditions. A lightweight merino or synthetic base layer moves moisture away from your skin. A mid-layer — fleece or packable down — adds insulation without bulk. Your outer shell blocks wind and rain. The key is managing these layers actively: strip the mid-layer before you start to sweat on the ascent, and add it back the moment you stop at the summit. In July and August, a lightweight windshell can often replace the full waterproof entirely on clear-weather days above 600 metres, saving significant pack weight.

Navigation and Safety

Even in the height of summer, the Lake District demands proper navigation skills. Carry a 1:25,000 OS Explorer map and a compass as backup — phone batteries drain faster in cold air and mobile signal is notoriously unreliable on the high ridges. Study your route thoroughly before you leave, share your plan with someone who will raise the alarm if needed, and always check the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) forecast the evening before. The fells are at their very best in summer; with the right preparation you can enjoy them confidently and safely.

Your Website. Your Words. No Developer Required.

Most businesses have a website. Most of those businesses have, at some point, needed to add something to it — a new service, a blog post, an update — and then spent longer than they'd like to admit either figuring out how to do it themselves or waiting for someone else to do it for them.

That's not how it should work. And for websites built by us at Richah, it doesn't have to be.

RiCreate is the content management system we built specifically for the websites we make. Creating pages, writing articles, publishing updates — all of it happens through RiCreate, on your own terms, without you needing to know anything about how a website actually works under the bonnet.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

You Write It. It Looks Right.

When you create a new piece of content in RiCreate, you start by choosing a layout — the kind of page you're building. A scrolling article with images. A split-screen layout where one side stays fixed while the other scrolls. A clean, straightforward page with headings and text. You pick the structure that fits what you're trying to say, and RiCreate handles the rest.

From there, you write your content in the editor. As you type, a live preview updates on the right-hand side so you can see exactly how it's going to look on your site — formatted, styled, with your headings in the right place. No publishing it and then wincing at the result. What you see is genuinely what you get.

There are sensible tools in there — heading styles, bold, links, a properly styled call-to-action button that uses your site's own design. Nothing unnecessary, nothing that requires a manual.

The AI Does the Parts You Don't Want To

The part that most people find genuinely useful — and slightly surprising the first time — is the AI assistance built into the editor.

If you know what a page needs to say but don't particularly want to write it yourself, you describe it. What the page is about, roughly how long it should be, any points it needs to cover. The AI writes a proper first draft — structured, readable, with headings and paragraphs — directly into your editor. You edit it, adjust it, make it sound like you. It's a starting point that's considerably further along than a blank page.

Already written something and want to improve it? You tell the AI what needs to change. It rewrites accordingly. It remembers your brief between sessions, so you're not starting the conversation from scratch every time you open the editor.

SEO That Actually Gets Done

Here is the thing about SEO. Everyone knows it matters. Very few people do it consistently, because it's one of those tasks that sits at the bottom of the list right up until the point where someone asks why their website isn't showing up on Google.

When your content is written, RiCreate generates the SEO for it. One button. The AI reads your page, writes a meta title and description — the headline and summary that appears in Google search results — and suggests a set of relevant search tags. It does this in the tone of voice you've set for your brand, not in that particular flavour of corporate nothing that AI often defaults to if you let it. You can regenerate any individual part without touching the rest, and you can edit everything directly.

Character counters show you whether your meta title and description are within the limits that search engines actually display. Sounds minor, but publishing a title that gets cut off mid-sentence in Google results is embarrassing in a quiet sort of way.

There's also structured data — JSON-LD schema markup — generated automatically for every piece of content you publish. This is the behind-the-scenes information that tells Google precisely what type of content a page is, who wrote it, what organisation it belongs to, and where it sits on your site. It's what enables things like breadcrumb trails in search results and, if you've added an FAQ section, your questions appearing in Google search results directly. Most websites don't have this set up properly. Yours does, automatically, every time you publish something.

Publish It, Save It, or Line It Up

When the content's ready, you can publish it immediately, save it as a draft to come back to, or schedule it to go live at a specific date and time. Scheduling is covered in its own article if you want the full picture — but briefly: you set a time, RiCreate publishes it automatically when that moment arrives, and your site updates itself. Nobody has to be there.

The content list gives you a view of everything across your site — what's live, what's in draft, what's scheduled and when. Straightforward to navigate, quick to see where everything stands.

It Only Works With Websites We've Built — Here's Why

Content creation in RiCreate works the way it does because of how closely it's integrated with the sites we build at Richah. The layouts you choose match the actual page designs on your site. The content publishes directly into the right place. The structured data pulls in your organisation's real details automatically. Everything talks to everything else.

That integration is only possible because we built the website in the first place. It's not something that can be retrofitted onto a site built elsewhere — the connection simply isn't there. For Richah-built sites, though, the whole thing runs smoothly and you don't need to think about any of it.

We Can Take Care of It For You

If the idea of managing your own content is more commitment than you're looking for, that's completely reasonable. Some businesses know they need a regularly updated website but don't have the time or inclination to be the ones doing the updating.

As part of our ongoing content management service, we handle it. We write the content, optimise it for search, and keep your site publishing consistently without you being involved in the day-to-day of it. If that sounds worth exploring, get in touch and we can talk through what it looks like.

In Short

RiCreate gives you the tools to create and publish proper, well-structured content on your website — without needing to involve a developer every time something needs updating. The AI assistance means you don't have to start from nothing, the SEO gets done automatically, and what you see in the editor is what your visitors see on the page.

It works with any website we've built at Richah. And if you'd rather we managed it ourselves, we can do that too.

RiCreate is part of the RiCollection — the suite of apps we've built to run alongside the websites we make. We're based in Lamplugh in the Lake District, and we like building things that work properly.
